A mobile mechanic was changing the oil in a vehicle when he posed an important question: Is Walmart’s Super Tech brand any different than Mobil 1 motor oil?
TikTok creator @agmobilemechanic asked the question in a video posted last week. “Sometimes I wanna use that Walmart Super Tech because it’s like $19 bucks. You guys think it’s the same?” he asks.
In the comments section of the video, viewers offered their opinions on the quality of Super Tech compared to its competitors and suggested their favored brands of motor oil.
“Super Tech, Amazon, and Kirkland oil are all the exact same oil,” claimed one viewer. “Also, watch Project Farm. Super Tech is tested really well.”
A second person said, “I get whatever oil is the cheapest, but I do NOT cheap out on the filter. Mobil 1, K&N, WIX, and Motorcraft are the best filters.”
“They’re all made by the same companies,” agreed a third. “Bottles are just marketing. Change every 4-5K miles. Don’t matter the oil.”
Another person said, “I like Valvoline Restore and Protect.”
Is Walmart Super Tech Oil Comparable To Mobil 1?
Walmart Super Tech oil is fully compatible with conventional oils and meets API Specifications SP and ILSAC GF-6A or previous standards. Reviews on the retailer’s website review the product mostly favorably, specifically noting its value.
According to Car From Japan, Walmart Super Tech oil is safe to put in your car—but that doesn’t mean it’s exactly the same as what you get in a bottle of Mobil 1. The site notes that the oil is made by Warren Oil Company and it meets industry standards. In terms of performance compared to other oils on the market, the site admits that even many car people decide based on brand loyalty, prior experience, and general preference.
Warren Oil Co. owns Autoguard, Lubriguard, Coastal, Itasca, and Gold Band.
EngineLabs did an experiment where its crew compared Super Tech to Chevron Havoline. And the results of the experiment might surprise you. According to EngineLabs, the engine “produced slightly more power and showed less wear” with Super Tech versus Havoline. Not only that, but the Super Tech stayed more stable under heat for a longer period of time.
Of course, other mechanics swear by Mobil 1’s synthetic motor oil, specifically noting its high-quality base and advanced additive packages. Some think that sterling reputation is less so in recent years.
What People Think About Walmart Compared To Mobil 1 Oil?
In a Reddit thread posted to r/CarTalk five months ago, a car owner asked what others think about Super Tech.
“It meets the same specs as all the other oils on the shelf at Walmart, including all the big names,” one person wrote. “If you don’t believe me, look at the bottle yourself. I don’t know where you’d even buy ‘bad’ oil these days.”
“Made by Warren Oil Co,” wrote a second person. “Reputable company, and the oil seems to have a decent additive pack.”
“It’s fantastic oil,” said a third viewer. “I've seen cars go over 300K miles with it. Would I use it on my [Subaru WRX STI]? No. Do I use it on everything else? Absolutely. I’ve ran it to 10-12K miles with no problems on several cars.”
