Super rare 6-inch MEGALADON shark tooth found by boat captain whose mind was 'blown'

A super rare 6-inch megalodon shark tooth has been discovered by a boat captain off the coast of Florida.

Michael Nastasio, owner of a Black Gold Fossil Charter, has been searching for megalodon teeth in Venice, US, since 2011, and regularly helps divers look for shark artefacts.

After wrapping up for the day, after an unsuccessful hunt, he headed on one last dive- and it turned out to be a masterstroke.

He told Fox News: "It was on the last dive of the day and the dive actually started off kind of bad, so the area I was trying to dive was pretty much covered up, it was all shelled out."

Just thirty minutes into the dive he stumbled upon a huge tooth but he was struggling to see who it belonged to.

Michael revealed the seafloor was covered with shells, so it was hard to make out any shark teeth.

He added "I swam for 30 minutes before I find any material that looks good, then I made two kicks and the tooth was looking straight at me. My mind was just blown."

The huge sharks went extinct about 2.6 million years ago, according to researchers at the University of Florida.

Fossils had been previously found in Panama, Maryland, and the Canary Islands. Some have even been recovered in Denmark and New Zealand.

The sharks went extinct due to changes in the climate, which reduced the amount of food available to them.

The diet of the shark consisted of seals, sea turtles, whales, sea cows and other sea creatures such as smaller sharks and other fish.

As the sharks were so big, they needed a lot of food to survive which is why small sharks ended up outliving the species.

According to Ocean, a shark expert resource, each predator has several rows of teeth lining its jaw and they continually shed their teeth and replace them with new ones.

Unlike humans, who have a limited amount of teeth, a shark can lose and replace thousands in its lifetime.

It is a cracking find (SNN)

Megalodon teeth can often be found scattered on coastal beaches or just offshore - with some reaching over 7 inches.

Michael said a megalodon shark tooth this large with this colour is extremely rare.

Megalodons were found all over the world and were the largest sharks to ever exist - they could grow to as long as 60ft.

We're gonna need a bigger dentist... (SNN)

It is nearly three times bigger than the modern great white sharks.

The megalodon is a member of the lineage of lamnoid sharks, which also include the great white, mako and thresher sharks, among others, according to Ocean.
