'Super pollen' to strike Britain this weekend as experts share hay fever survival tips

"Super pollen" is set to strike Britain this weekend with experts revealing their top tips to help hay fever sufferers survive.

The Met Office has issued "very high" pollen count warnings in many southern and eastern parts of the UK where the weather is "dry and warm".

The weather service added: "It is peak grass pollen season so hay fever sufferers may need to take precautions."

London and Leeds will see very high pollen counts today and tomorrow, continuing into Sunday in the capital, while levels in Cardiff will remain high throughout the weekend.

Meanwhile, pollen counts will be at a medium level in Belfast and low in Edinburgh.

Giving advice to hay fever sufferers, interior experts at Next have shared some ways to ease symptoms in your own home.

These tips include buying silk pillowcases, reports the Liverpool Echo, which are naturally hypoallergenic and block pollen when resting your head at night time.

Hay fever sufferers are also advised to regularly declutter, removing items where dust builds up, and dusting with a damp cloth to avoid particles spreading into the air.

Pets should be bathed at least once a week to avoid pollen and dust particles being brought inside from their fur.

Flowering houseplants including Orchids, Spider plants and Stephanotis are also a no go because their pollen production may aggravate hay fever symptoms.

And properties with wooden, laminate or tile flooring are prone to build-ups of dust, which can be washed away by using a steam mop regularly.

The tips come as a poll finds more than half of Brits experience hay fever allergies – with two in five of these saying their seasonal reactions started earlier than usual this year.

The survey of 2,000 UK adults found tree pollen, grass, and dust mites to be the most common components causing symptoms to flare up.

But more unusual causes of things like dry eyes and sneezing come from wearing jewellery, getting a tattoo – and even drinking wine.

Of those who do experience seasonal allergies, the warmer months from May to August are when they are worst hit, with one in four (26 per cent) of these often experiencing severe reactions.

It emerged more than half (54 per cent) of those with allergies have learnt to live with their symptoms, and have not explored ways they can help to keep them at bay.

While seven in ten (71 per cent) have even self-diagnosed themselves with an allergy.
