Super Mario Galaxy Movie creators ran every cameo past Miyamoto, saying if it's "not going to work for him, we're not going to do it"

Fox McCloud in the The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has arrived on our screens, and it features some pretty huge cameos. From the introduction of Fox McCloud to some more niche arrivals, the brains behind the new video game movie have revealed that Mario creator – and the film's producer – Shigeru Miyamoto was their barometer for every one of their choices.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, producer Chris Meledandri discussed the arrival of Star Fox in this context, explaining his inclusion came from wanting there to be surprises in the movie. He explained: "It’s less about a crossover and it’s more about an element coming into the movie that the audience will be delighted by because of their own previous association with the characters."

However, the producer acknowledged, "It’s always hard to know if you try something like that. We, fortunately, have Miyamoto-San to be able to embrace or reject ideas like that, because if a notion like that is not going to work for him, we’re not going to do it – first of all. But second of all, we know it’s not going to work for an audience."

The movie is a follow up to 2023's The Super Mario Bros. Movie, featuring much of the original film's voice cast back as the iconic characters. However, it's so far failed to live up critically to its predecessor with a pretty lackluster Rotten Tomatoes score. Our own The Super Mario Galaxy Movie review gave the film three stars, as writer Bradley Russell writes that it "surpasses the original in both the action and animation departments".
