Sunderland supporters want manager Alex Neil to be given long-term contract

Sunderland fans have overwhelmingly backed Alex Neil to be given a long-term contract – while giving a thumbs up to not appointing Roy Keane.

In Chronicle Live’s latest survey had 1394 respondents and 90.3 percent of them thought Neil, who was appointed Sunderland 's manager in February, should be rewarded for the club's promotion to the Championship with a long-term contract. Only 3.5 percent thought he should not be, while 6.2 percent were unsure.

Neil was appointed after the dismissal of Lee Johnson, who had started the season reasonably, with the club flitting between automatic promotion spots and the League One play-off spots. However, after a 6-0 loss away to Bolton Wanderers, Johnson was dismissed.

Neil was then brought in with the team in fourth spot. Ultimately they finished fifth, lining up a play-off semi-final battle against Sheffield Wednesday.

Neil steered them past Wednesday and to the final against Wycombe Wanderers at Wembley. The Black Cats then registered an impressive 2-0 win over Wycombe Wanderers, who had finished the season in sixth spot.

Fans were also asked in the survey whether they thought it was the right decision to not appoint Roy Keane as manager, who was the front runner to replace Johnson at the beginning of February, but reportedly turned an offer down. In a Chronicle Live survey at the time, 55 percent of respondents said they wanted Keane to be appointed.

In the new survey however, 82.9 percent of respondents said it was the right decision to not appoint Roy Keane, while 10.3 percent said they were unsure. Only 6.8 percent now thought he should have been appointed.
