Sunderland supporters have called on the club to sign a striker on a permanent deal after Ellis Simms was recalled by parent club Everton. The Toffees have been impressed by the loanee after scoring seven goals in 17 appearances at the Stadium of Light.
However, red and white supporters know that with Ross Stewart in the final few months of his contract - albeit the club have the option for another year - any injury to the striker would be curtains for their promotion push. The Black Cats have defied expectations so far this season and will head into the new year in fourth position.
The loss of Simms' has increased the importance of Stewart signing a new contract on Wearside, while also showing the need for a striker in January.

Here's what Sunderland supporters had to say on social media after the departure:
@p0rksavage said: "Big loss, I do think this increases the chances of keeping RS though which is a plus . I feel Simms talent could be replaced (not easily but it could) where is we cannot replace what RS brings to the team. We were positive 2 days ago, everyone needs to remain this way."
@SAFCYoungy said: "Now put your hand in your pocket and give Stewart the contract he wants and deserves and get another striker in to play along side him."
@SamCD41 tweeted: "This is why you need more than 1 striker that is signed to the club. Shot ourselves in the foot once again. Typical Sunderland."
@twangmackem said: "Now the ball is in Kristjaan Speakman's hand now. Needs to sign Loch Ness Drogba down and get couple new strikers through the door very quickly. Best of luck to Ellis though. Been a pleasure."
@missalimac1964 tweeted: "Best wishes and thank you."
@PhilBeckettuk said: "Best get cracking then Kris hadn't you. Come on, you've work to do marra."
