Sunderland have been promoted to the Championship after beating Wycombe Wanderers in the League One play-off final at Wembley. Goals from Elliot Embleton and Ross Stewart either side of half-time sealed a momentous win for the Black Cats to end their four-year spell in the English third-tier.
The win also put an end to Sunderland’s historical play-off misery - this being their first taste of play-off glory in seven attempts through the Championship and League One. Alex Neil’s side but in a battling display to fend off Wycombe before providing two moments of attacking quality - the first with the help of Wanderer’s goalkeeper David Stockdale - to send the red and white half of Wembley into ecstasy.
The result is the culmination of an incredible period in charge for Neil, who came to the Stadium of Light and took Sunderland on a 15-game unbeaten run in the run up to the final. His decision to start Embleton paid dividends with the local lad - who has been at the club since he was seven-years-old - scoring a brilliant opener.
