Sunderland's Tony Mowbray in the running for Championship manager of the month award

Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray has been nominated for the December Championship Manager of the Month award. The Black Cats boss has been nominated alongside Burnley's Vincent Kompany, Sheffield United's Paul Heckingbottom, and West Bromwich Albion's Carlos Corberan.

Under Mowbray, Sunderland collected ten points from five games last month, with their fit-again strike pairing Ross Stewart and Ellis Simms accounting for six of the 11 goals they scored in that spell. Goals from Amad, Alex Pritchard, and Simms gave the Black Cats a 3-0 win over Millwall on Wearside at the beginning of the month, before a 2-1 home defeat against West Brom and then a 1-1 draw at Hull City slowed their momentum.

But they responded with a 2-1 win against Blackburn Rovers on Boxing Day, with both Stewart and Simms on the scoresheet, before rounding off the month with an emphatic 4-1 win at Wigan Athletic, with Simms, Stewart, Patrick Roberts, and Amad, scoring their goals. Kompany saw his tabletopping Burnley side took a maximum 12 points from their four games in December, scoring ten goals in the process.

And Corberan's Baggies collected 12 points from a possible 15 last month - including a win against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light - as they continued their climb away from danger.
