Sunderland's game against Millwall postponed after Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II passes away

Sunderland's game with Millwall and all other EFL and Premier League fixtures scheduled for this weekend have been postponed following the tragic passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport held a call with all major sporting governing bodies this morning and the official guidance was that the decision over whether to go ahead this weekend was left to the individual organisations.

But both the Premier League and the EFL have decided to cancel all games this weekend as a mark of respect. A statement released by the EFL this morning read: 'Further to discussions on Friday morning it has been determined that all EFL fixtures from 9-10 September will be postponed as a mark of respect by the national sport to the passing of HRH Queen Elizabeth II.

'This is aligned with the approach that the Premier League and the FA will take with their competitions this weekend. Further information, in respect of how football, clubs and their supporters will commemorate Her Majesty's reign will be confirmed at an appropriate point.

'Details regarding rearranged games will be announced in due course.'

The Queen served as the head of the Royal Family for 70 years, making her Britain's longest-serving monarch. The UK has now entered a national period of mourning which will last until the funeral - traditionally held ten days later - after her passing at Balmoral on Thursday evening.

The EFL wasted no time confirming Friday's Championship clash between Burnley and Norwich City had been postponed late on Thursday evening. “Consideration in respect of EFL fixtures will be discussed with the Government and the wider sport sector during the period ahead and an appropriate announcement will be made at the earliest opportunity,” an EFL spokesperson said.

Sunderland released a statement following the Queen's passing, writing: "We are saddened to learn of the passing of Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II. Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with the Royal Family at this difficult time."

After the death of George VI in 1952, rugby and hockey fixtures were called off, while football matches went ahead. Fans sang Abide With Me and the national anthem before kick off at matches. All games, including golf, will be banned in the Royal Parks.

Following Princess Diana's death on Sunday, August 31, 1997, the Liverpool vs Newcastle United Premier League match scheduled to kick off later that day was postponed. Football League fixtures the following weekend were moved to avoid clashing with Diana's funeral. The Premier League was on an international break.
