Sunderland's Dennis Cirkin could be offered the chance to switch international allegiance

Sunderland's Dennis Cirkin could be offered the chance to switch his international allegiance in a move that would increase his chances of a senior cap. The Black Cats left-back has already represented England at U16, U17, U18, and U20 levels, but also qualifies for the Republic of Ireland having been born in Dublin, and for Latvia through his parents.

Republic of Ireland boss Stephen Kelly is keeping an eye on Cirkin's progress on Wearside and has made initial enquiries about his status. So far there has been no firm reply, but if the 21-year-old continues to impress there is a chance that Kelly could pose the question.

"I know all about Dennis," said Kelly. "He declared for England, so we'll have to see on that one.

"He’s just focusing on Sunderland this season. I've asked that question [concerning his eligibility for Ireland] and I'm not even 100 percent sure. It's yet to be confirmed that he can switch, and he hasn't applied to do so."

Cirkin came through the academy system at Spurs before joining Sunderland in the summer of 2021. He played the majority of Sunderland's games as the club won promotion from League One via the play-offs 12 months ago, and was also a regular in the Championship last season - albeit his campaign was disrupted by injuries.

He has made 69 appearances in all competitions for Sunderland, scoring five goals.
