Sunderland will face Luton Town in the Championship play-off semi-final after securing a top six finish on the final day of the season. The first leg of the semi-final will take place at the Stadium of Light on with kick-off at 5.30pm. The second leg will take place at Kenilworth Road on Tuesday, May 16, with kick-off at 8pm. The other semi-final will pit third-place Middlesbrough against Coventry City, who finished fourth, after those two teams fought out a 1-1 draw on the final day of the season.
Both legs of both play-off semi-finals will be screened live on Sky Sports. Sunderland beat Preston North End 3-0 at Deepdale on the last day of the season thanks to goals from Amad, Alex Pritchard, and Jack Clarke, but they still needed help from elsewhere.
They needed either Boro to beat Coventry or for Millwall to drop points at home to Blackburn Rovers. And in the end it was Tony Mowbray's previous club Blackburn who came up trumps, coming from 3-1 down to win 4-3 at The Den. Blackburn scored their equaliser just as Pritchard scored Sunderland's second goal against Preston, and they completed the turnaround five minutes from time to give the Black Cats a measure of comfort in the final stages in Lancashire.
