Sunderland player ratings as Amad and Clarke shine in draw against Luton

Amad came off the bench to score from the penalty spot and earn Sunderland a point against Luton Town at the Stadium of Light. The on-loan Manchester United forward was making his comeback after missing the last two games with a hamstring issue.

And Amad earned the penalty five minutes from time when he was fouled by Amari Bell, and then got up to coolly convert. Sunderland had hit the post in the first half through Dan Neil, but Luton had gone in front through Alfie Doughty early in the second period.

The draw meant Tony Mowbray's Sunderland moved up one place to 11th in the Championship table, while Luton stay fourth and on course for the play-offs. The Championship now pauses for the international break before Sunderland resume their campaign a week on Friday against runaway leaders Burnley at Turf Moor.

Here's how our Sunderland AFC writer James Hunter rated the players.

Anthony Patterson 6

One fine save from Doughty, and while the goal looked like a mistake, he was unsighted

Trai Hume 7

An excellent shift at right-back from a player who has made that role his own

Dan Ballard 7

Outstanding in central defence against Luton's powerful front players

Danny Batth 7

Strong alongside Ballard and they are developing a very good partnership

Luke O'Nien 7

A fine game at left-back, and made some crucial clearances. Brought a good save out of Horvath, too

Edouard Michut 6

Used the ball well in the middle of the park

Dan Neil 7

A solid game and only the woodwork denied him a goal in the first half

Patrick Roberts 6

Lots of neat touches but too often lacked end product

Abdoullah Ba 6

Worked hard and did OK in the number ten role

Jack Clarke 7

Always a threat down the left and was at the heart of most of Sunderland's best moves

Joe Gelhardt 5

Continues to struggle. Missed the target with another big chance

Subs

Amad 7

For Ba 55mins. Back in action after injury and earned and won the penalty

Alex Pritchard 7

For Hume 72mins. His probing pass led to the penalty incident

Pierre Ekwah 6

For Gelhardt 72mins. A strong physical presence when he came on

Jewison Bennette 7

For Neil 72mins. Brought fresh energy when he entered the action

Lynden Gooch 6

For Michut 72mins. Worked hard as Sunderland pushed for that equaliser

Not used: Bass, Lihadji
