Sunderland are looking at a loan signing and a possible permanent deal as they look to replace striker Ellis Simms, who was recalled by Everton yesterday. Simms was on a season-long loan with the Black Cats but the contract included a January recall clause, which the struggling Toffeemen activated to bring him back to Goodison Park to help with their battle against relegation from the Premier League.
Simms had scored seven goals in 17 outings for Sunderland and his departure means Ross Stewart is now the club's only centre-forward, which means it is imperative they bring in at least one more striker during the January transfer window. "Ellis going back to his parent club has probably accelerated some of the discussions that are being had," said boss Tony Mowbray, who saw his side draw 1-1 at Blackpool this afternoon.
"I can't say that something is going to happen this week, but the discussions are ongoing. It might be another loan, but there are also some discussion about a young striker on a permanent basis.
