Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray has revealed Amad's "body has almost shut down" after a gruelling season at the Stadium of Light.
Amad, who joined Sunderland on a season-long loan from Manchester United last summer, is currently in the middle of his first full campaign at senior level. The 20-year-old has impressed in the Championship - scoring eight goals in 28 games to silence his critics.
He was unavailable for Sunderland's 1-0 win against Norwich last Sunday and will not feature against Sheffield United on Wednesday due to a hamstring injury. Mowbray's confession will concern Erik ten Hag, who may give Amad a chance next term.
Mowbray was asked about Amad's fitness after his team's win against Norwich. "I had a good chat with Amad yesterday and Wednesday might be too soon for him", said Mowbray. "I am not sure, but he will definitely be available next weekend."
Amad has experienced an indifferent time in England since joining United from Atalanta in a £37million deal just over two years ago. He has played just three Premier League games for the Red Devils and spent the second half of last season on loan at Rangers.
Yet Amad has revived his Old Trafford career by putting in a string of quality displays for Sunderland. Mowbray will be hoping the talent recovers quickly, as his team are just five points off the play-offs. Ten Hag will also be hoping it is not a serious injury.

Speaking to Sunderland's media, Mowbray added, "I think 30 odd games from never having a run of three games on the bounce has proved his body has almost shut down.
"His hamstrings are really sore and tight. There is no tear and there is no damage. He is just in a place where we need to give him a break and check him out of the equation for a week at the most and then he will finish the season strong, I am sure."
Amad still has two-and-a-bit years left on his existing deal. It is unclear whether he will be part of Ten Hag's squad next season, as the Dutchman has several wide players at his disposal - including Antony, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho.
Yet it will come as no surprise if Amad is included. Ten Hag said in January, "We consider everything but I have a little bit of reservation about [recalling Amad] because I don’t want to stop the process. He has made really good progress there so I’m happy with that.
"But young players need experiences and when we decide for him to come back, he has to be a player who can compete for the starting XI or minimum to come on for a lot of games and make an impact."
Mowbray was appointed by Sunderland in August and has been full of praise for Amad since. "I watch him in training with our players and he does some extraordinary things with the ball, its stuck to his foot it’s unbelievable how talented he is," he said in December.
