Sunderland among host of clubs reportedly chasing Oxford United midfielder on free transfer

Sunderland are among a host of clubs interested in signing Oxford United midfielder Alex Rodriguez- Gorrin on a free transfer. That is according to The Mirror.

The report also claims that recent promoted Wigan Athletic, Portsmouth, Burton Albion and Lincoln City are all also keen on his services.

Rodriguez-Gorrin’s contract at Oxford is set to expire this summer, though it does not appear as if he will be offered fresh terms at the Kassam Stadium. The 28-year-old has struggled for game time this season after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in an FA Cup tie at Bristol Rovers in November.

However, prior to his serious knee injury, Rodriguez-Gorrin – who made 43 appearances for Sunderland’s U23s side between 2010 and 2014 – was a regular in the Oxford midfield, which twice went close to promotion to the Championship. He was part of both sides who finished in the League One top six, first losing in the final to Wycombe Wanderers, before then being beaten by Blackpool a year later.

It is yet unclear as to whether this signing would be dependant on the division the Black Cats are playing in next season, as they get ready for the League One play-off final against Wycombe next weekend. If Sunderland are defeated at Wembley, Rodriguez-Gorrin would provide them with an abundance of experience at the top of League One.

Should they get promoted, he would be a low-cost option that would boost the depth in midfield. But competition is set to be fierce for Rodriguez-Gorrin and so promotion could give them the edge over several of the other clubs competing for his signature.
