Sunday Times Rich List: Bristol dominates South West list featuring Sir James Dyson and Stephen Fitzpatrick

Bristol dominates the recent edition of The Sunday Times Rich List in the South West. Sir James Dyson remains at the top of the regional list, weighing in at 5th nationally.

Mr Dyson, who owns household and technology company Dyson, is said to be worth around £23bn. The company's software and technology hub is currently based in Bristol and it has recently announced plans for a £100m tech hub in the city.

Meanwhile, Stephen Fitzpatrick, the founder and CEO of Vertical Aeorospace, comes in third place - the highest climber in the region. The Ovo energy and transport entrepreneur is worth an estimated £2.212bn.

His company is based near Temple Meads. It is currently developing a flying taxi which boasts tilting propellers, allowing them to take off like a helicopter but fly like a plane.

Elsewhere in the top five of the definitive list are both Peter Hargreaves and Steve Lansdown. The former is said to be worth around £1.865bn while the latter weighs in at £1.179bn.

The pair are co-founders of Hargreaves Lansdown which remains one of the UK's leading financial services businesses. The firm is headquartered on Anchor Road, in Bristol, and employees over 2,000 people.

While Mr Lansdown is also founder of Bristol Sport and the majority shareholder of Bristol Bears, Bristol Flyers, and Bristol City FC.

Robert Watts, compiler of the Sunday Times Rich List, said: "This year's Sunday Times Rich List shows a golden period for the super rich is over. For the first time in 14 years we've seen the number of UK billionaires fall.

"Two years ago we raised concerns about an unsettling boom in the fortunes of the very wealthy that continued unchecked during the political instability around Brexit and the pandemic. This is not a crash - but there are household names who have lost vast sums over the past year. The bursting of the tech bubble, the end of rock bottom interests and the jitters creeping through the banking industry have all taken their toll.

“The super rich don't exist in a vacuum. Many small investors lost money in some of their overblown stock market floats. Many people also work for their businesses. Financial losses for billionaires can have implications for us all."

Here are the five wealthiest in the South West, according to the latest edition of The Sunday Times Rich List.

  1. Sir James Dyson and family - Dyson - £23bn
  2. John Christodoulou - Yianis Group - £2.45bn
  3. Stephen Fitzpatrick - OVO and Vertical Aerospace - £2.212bn
  4. Peter Hargreaves - Hargreaves Lansdown - £1.865bn
  5. Steve Lansdown - Hargreaves Lansdown - £1.179bn
