Rishi Sunak has completed a spectacular political comeback to become the next prime minister, after rival Penny Mordaunt dropped out.
The former chancellor won the support of Conservative MPs to succeed Liz Truss as Tory leader today and will enter Downing Street less than two months after he lost the last race.
Sunak will be the UK’s first Hindu prime minister, the first of Asian heritage, and the youngest for more than 200 years at the age of 42.
Mordaunt, the Commons Leader, bowed out of the race as she struggled to get the 100 nominations from Tory MPs required by the 2pm deadline.
With Boris Johnson having ditched his own bid at a comeback, Sunak will enter No 10 unopposed and avoid an online ballot of the Conservative members that rejected him for Truss last month.
He now has the daunting task of leading the nation through an economic crisis only exacerbated by the chaotic legacy of Truss, who was ousted after only six weeks in office.
In a statement posted online two minutes before the deadline, Mordaunt said her opponent now has her “full support”.
“These are unprecedented times, despite the compressed timetable for the leadership contest it is clear that colleagues feel we need certainty today,” she said. “They have taken this decision in good faith for the good of the country.
“Members should know that this proposition has been fairly and thoroughly tested by the agreed 1922 process.
“As a result, we have now chosen our next prime minister.”
Sir Graham Brady, who as chairman of the 1922 Committee of backbench Conservatives was overseeing the contest, said he received only one valid nomination form.
“Rishi Sunak is therefore elected the next leader of the Conservative Party,” he added.
Commenting, the SNP's Westminster leader Ian Blackford MP said: “No one voted for this, the only reason the Tories are running scared of democracy is because they fear the verdict of the people.
“There's no better indication of that than the polling in Scotland, which shows voting SNP could wipe the Tories out completely.“
Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar said: “The crisis that the UK faces is not simply down to who the Prime Minister is - changing the Prime Minister will not stop the rot.
“This is a morally bankrupt and incompetent Tory party that cares only about hanging on to power.
“Rishi Sunak has no mandate to lead the country - it’s time we had a general election and swept this immoral government from power.”
Scottish Greens co-leader Patrick Harvie added: “Rishi Sunak’s appointment will be music to the ears of his super rich friends, but, for millions of people in Scotland and beyond it will be devastating.
“They crashed the economy and now they will try to make the most vulnerable pay for it - that is what they do every time they get a sniff of power - that is what he did when he was chancellor and he cut Universal Credit by £1,000 a year.”
