Suit-clad Boris Johnson tries to escape political woes on family boat trip

Boris Johnson tried to escape from his political woes on a family day out, where he donned a suit jacket for a £3-a-head boat trip around a nature reserve.

The Prime Minister was a tad dressed up for the jaunt with his wife Carrie and their children, one-year-old Wilf and baby Romy at Arundel Wetland Centre in West Sussex last month.

The family had reportedly spent Mother's Day at a country retreat in the South Downs after the Tories endured a bruising week marred by the backlash from Rishi Sunak's Spring Statement.

Tim McGregor, who manages the centre, told The Mail on Sunday: "I thought it was very healthy that he found time to do dad things – and I think he did “dad” really well.

"He was very similar to what you see on TV, enthusiastic, but he was focused on his children.

"It was very low-key."

Another onlooker said: "The guide was pointing out the ducklings to Boris and his family as they got on the boat.

"At one point, Boris lay down and Wilfred climbed on his back."

Last November, Mr Johnson was spotted on a trip to Peppa Pig world in Hampshire with his son Wilf and Carrie, who was pregnant with their daughter Romy.

The next day he gave a widely-panned speech to business leaders in South Shields where he rambled about Peppa Pig and imitated a car.

Praising the private sector, he told bemused business chiefs: “Yesterday I went, as we all must, to Peppa Pig World. Hands up if you’ve been to Peppa Pig World?

"I loved it. Peppa Pig World is very much my kind of place. It has very safe streets, discipline in schools, heavy emphasis on new mass transit systems.

"Even if they’re a bit stereotypical about Daddy Pig."

An ITV reporter later asked Mr Johnson "is everything OK?"

He replied: "I think people got the vast majority of the points I wanted to make and I thought it went over well."
