Sudden closure of Kenmore's village shop and post office leaves locals up in arms

Kenmore Post Office and shop closed on Sunday leaving residents of the village at the head of Loch Tay without a local shop.

Another retail outlet - The Courtyard Shop - remains but is aimed at visitors and is limited in what it stocks for day-to-day needs.

Post Office services have now ceased to exist without a six and a half mile drive to Aberfeldy.

Much of Kenmore village, part of the enormous Taymouth Estate, has changed hands recently as Discovery Land Group is believed to now own not just Taymouth Castle, but Kenmore Hotel, Kenmore Luxury Lodges and many dwellings.

Villagers are uncertain how the deal will affect them but the shop is understood to be unwanted as a business going forward.

The newsagents shop manager and postmistress Wilma Harrison told the PA she was informed by her current employers, Kenmore Luxury Lodges directors Malcolm Flinn and Steven Turnbull that the shop was not going to continue and her job was over.

She understood that Discovery Land Group did not wish to buy the retail business which was based in a single room in the village square.

Wilma has run the Post Office and shop for the past three and a half years. She lives opposite and six generations of her family have lived in Kenmore, now a popular holiday village.

She told the PA she’d been formally told of her redundancy just over a week ago.

“Before we were told the shop would be sold to the castle people but then they decided not to take it on.

“Personally the decision to shut the shop is really shocking. I was really upset when I heard.

“It will be a total loss to the village. A lot of older people don’t drive and they are now going to need to go to Aberfeldy.

“The newspaper delivery reached a lot of people who live rurally. They will lose this service now.

“Our customers have been very supportive, but they are in a real predicament now.

“There were a lot of very angry people when we shut the door on Sunday.

“As far as what I’ll do, I’m planning a holiday. I’m going to take a month to rest and regroup. It’s three years since I took a break.”

Kenmore and District Community Council plans to discuss options for maintaining Post Office services and a shop of some kind at an online meeting on Thursday, May 26.

The Community Council is in discussions with the current owner who has agreed to meet to discuss "feasible options".

Posting the meeting details up on Facebook, it said: "The threat of immediate closure of Kenmore shop and PO is a concern for our community and others, in fact all between Aberfeldy and Killin. A shop is vital for provisions, postal services, and a place to meet neighbours and friends."
