Alex Hughes Mark Hughes the British Heart Foundation

The death of Alex Hughes, the 38-year-old son of former Manchester United and Wales footballer Mark Hughes, has drawn attention to a rare but devastating phenomenon known as Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome (SADS).

Alex died after collapsing at his home in Cheshire on June 19, 2026. An inquest subsequently determined that SADS was the cause of his death. His death came unexpectedly, with no clear structural explanation identified after examination of his heart.
