Subnautica 2 leaks early, Unknown Worlds confirms, but those builds are "incomplete development versions" that don't reflect the full game

Subnautica 2 has leaked early, developer Unknown Worlds has confirmed, but the devs say the builds that have surfaced are "incomplete development versions" that don't reflect the full game that's set to launch into official early access tomorrow.

As highlighted on social media yesterday, screenshots and a video clip from the upcoming game had surfaced online. While the leaker didn't share an enormous amount, it was enough to show that someone appeared to have gotten hold of the game before they should have, and with that, the floodgates to spoilers were seemingly open.

Now, in a statement sent to IGN, Unknown Worlds has confirmed this, though it doesn't reveal how exactly the leak happened.

"We've identified that unofficial builds of Subnautica 2 are currently circulating online," a spokesperson says. "These builds are incomplete development versions and do not reflect the content or gameplay experience being prepared for the official release."

Unknown Worlds reminds fans that "files distributed through unofficial channels cannot be verified for safety or stability, and certain features or content may not function as intended." And, in case it wasn't obvious, "the complete" experience with updates and multiplayer support "will be delivered exclusively through official builds on our partner platforms."

There's really not long to wait for the actual early access release, either – it's launching on Steam and Xbox Series X|S tomorrow, May 14. It's been a strange week for game leaks, though – some Xbox users have been able to access Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight a week early, apparently thanks to a Walmart pre-order snafu that provided folks with ready-working game codes.

Forza Horizon 6 also leaked ahead of schedule, with developer Playground Games confirming as such, but clarifying that it wasn't "the result of a pre-load issue." The studio is now taking strict action against "any individuals found accessing this build including franchise-wide and hardware bans."

Subnautica 2 hit 5 million Steam wishlists days before its early access launch, so "every player" gets a special gift.
