Subhash Chawla quits as Chandigarh Congress president

CHANDIGARH: Subhash Chawla on Saturday resigned as the president of the Chandigarh Congress, without elaborating on the reason and saying he "would speak on the issue in a couple of weeks".

Chawla was appointed to the post in January last year. At the time, outgoing president Pardeep Chhabra had targeted his appointment. Chhabra had joined the AAP right before the MC elections last year in which the Congress had doubled its tally but came last in a three-party race with only eight councillors in the house of 35. Chawla had come under criticism for his handling of the election campaign, particularly ticket allocation.

Immediately after the elections, the Congress had lost councillor Harpreet Kaur Babla to the BJP. Her husband Devinder Singh Babla, a former Congress councillor, too had switches sides. A few days back, another Congress councillor, Gurcharan Jeet Singh Kala, had joined the BJP.
