Stunning village just an hour away from Edinburgh named one of 'UK's poshest'

Edinburgh and the Lothians may be blessed with some stunning locations, but just over the water to the Kingdom of Fife is where you'll find the picture postcard village that was recently named one of the UK's 'poshest'.

Heading across the Firth of Forth to the East Neuk of Fife, you'll discover the beautiful village of Elie, which is one of those places that wouldn't look out of place on the cover of a shortbread tin – and the ideal spot for a wee day trip for some delicious food and drinks by the sea.

One of the east coast's most scenic places, Elie has its own golden sand beaches and panoramic seaside views, with charming little houses dotted along the coastal front.

Luxury British estate agent Savills named it among the most desirable villages to live in across England, Wales and Scotland, at the tail end of last year and it's easy to see why.

Sharing the research with the Telegraph, other villages in Scotland named in the list included East Lothian's own hidden gem, Gullane, Killearn in Stirling and Strathtay in Perthshire.

Speaking about the Fife gem, the team stated: "This sheltered inlet started out as a harbour village in the 16th century. It was the Victorians who built large detached properties and turned it into a tourist resort.

"There are five beaches with plenty of watersports on offer, a tennis club and an abundance of restaurants, including the Ship Inn and the 19th Hole at Earlsferry, and the Michelin-starred Peat Inn is a short drive away. There’s the treasured Ardross Farm Shop and the Wade Gallery, too."

And it's the Ship Inn that's probably the village's most famous location, with the beach side pub having a cricket team that is the only one in the UK to play their matches on a beach (tide permitting of course). They play every second weekend through the season, which runs from May until September, with people regularly gathering in the beer garden at the ever-popular Ship Inn to watch the Inn's team play.

And rumour has it, that any batsman hitting a six which lands in the Ship Inn beer garden will win their "height in beer", while any non-playing spectator who catches said six in the beer garden will also win the same prize.

There is also the much-loved Harbour Café, which is run by husband-and-wife team Amy and Jack Elles source local heritage breed beef and lamb from nearby Balcaskie Estate, prepared by the Butchery at Bowhouse, alongside organic fresh produce from East Neuk Market Garden to make their incredible dishes.

This wonderful village is also just a pleasant walk away from the East Neuk's other famous towns and villages including Anstruther, Crail and Pittenweem – where you'll find some of the country's most famous fish and chip shops.
