A stunning Baronial mansion in the Borders that was once visited by a famous former US president has just gone up for sale.
The beautiful Glenmayne estate, which comes with 30 acres of land, is rich with history with President Ulysses S. Grant said to have visited in the late 1800s.
The eight-bedroom property dates back to 1866 when it was built by wealthy local merchant John Murray.
Included in the sale is the mansion itself, which comes with its own gym, games room and bar, a 3 bedroom lodge cottage, a triple garage and groom’s flat, a gardener’s bothy and even a vine house.
Priced at £4 million, estate agents Knight Frank say it has been completely "renovated, restored and improved to the highest of standards by the current owners.
Speaking to Mansion Global about the mansion's rich history, seller Mark Gilbert said: “The man who built it was a real international player.
"In the late 1800s, President Ulysses S. Grant was picked up by horse and carriage at Melrose Station and had lunch at Glenmayne.”
Located in the Scottish Borders close to the River Tweed, the property lies a short distance from the nearby Border towns of Galashiels and Melrose and is just over an hour's drive from the capital.
As opulent as it gets, the house is filled with marble fireplaces, stone staircases, original period fittings and even a helipad.
Current owner Mark Gilbert and his wife bought the property 19 years ago (in 2003) and have spent the time restoring it to its former glory.
As well as an Italian garden with its own ponds and waterfall, Mr Gilbert joked that they have three highland cows that live in the front field which could also be included in the sale.
