Stunning 'never seen before' photographs of Merseyside unearthed from 70 years ago

Never before seen images of Merseyside are set to feature in a new exhibition opening this weekend.

The brand new exhibition of photographs of Wallasey between 1955 and 2022 contains nearly 100 images that have never been displayed before.

Wallasey comprises of several distinct districts including Egremont, Liscard, New Brighton, Poulton, Seacombe and Wallasey Village.

These districts gradually merged to form a single built-up area during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Unlike in most other towns, there is no single Wallasey town centre, although the main shopping area is in Liscard.

The exhibition will be run by Richard Jackson of Devil's Nest, who has organised several other exhibitions previously containing historic photographs of Merseyside.

Richard told the ECHO : "Following the success of my book ‘Old Wallasey’ and the accompanying exhibition in 2021, I received numerous requests from visitors to offer another event.

"‘Wallasey Old & New’ is an all-new showcase exhibition of photographs dating from 1955 to 2022.

"In preparation for this event, I was to be able to digitise over 20,000 negatives made available to me by Wirral Archives.

"I was delighted by the condition in which these invaluable and irreplaceable records have survived. Many of them appear not to have been handled since they were taken and developed nearly 70 years ago.

"In a first for my exhibitions and books, I can state that every single photograph has been scanned from the original negatives, exhibited and published for the very first time."

A book accompanying the exhibition features over 170 images including all the photographs on display and is exclusively available from the exhibition shop for £15. Additionally, all of the photographs in the exhibition are for sale.

Richard added: "I hope all who read this book and attend the exhibition will enjoy the many unseen photographs that are now available to the general public."

Entrance to the exhibition is free with no need to book. Open everyday 10am-4pm from February 26 to March 27 in the Rockpoint Pop Up Gallery in Victoria Road, New Brighton.
