Unaware Manchester City loanee Joao Cancelo was left shocked by a reporter who broke the news that he had a new Bayern Munich boss following Portugal’s 4-0 Euro 2024 qualifying win over Liechtenstein on Thursday evening.
The German giants, who trail Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga by a point, dismissed Julian Nagelsmann before quickly announcing the appointment of Thomas Tuchel, who subjected Cancelo and City to defeat in the 2021 Champions League final while manager of Chelsea.
Cancelo will take on his parent club in the competition in next month’s quarter-finals with European competition loan rules allowing him to face City. The Bayern squad will be looking for a new-manager-bounce as they travel to the Etihad before the return leg a week later.

Cancelo was understandably oblivious to what had unfolded back in Germany with the defender concentrating on earning an opening group win for Portugal. The full-back was interviewed by Sport TV after the match, which is when its reporter broke the news to him.
“This is breaking news: coach change at Bayern. Tuchel is the new coach. What is your reaction?” he told Cancelo. “I did not know! I'm a little surprised,” the stunned 28-year-old responded.
“Thanks to Nagelsmann, he was the one who wanted me at Bayern. All the luck in the world to him. I'm going to try to adapt our coach's concepts as much as possible because we have several important games, in the decisive phase of the season.
“Bayern is a team always ready to win everything. As for Tuchel, he made me lose a Champions League final, so I hope he will win it for me this year!”
