- A new study suggests that popular designer crossbreed dogs, such as cockapoos and cavapoos, may exhibit more behavioural problems than their purebred parent breeds.
- Researchers from the Royal Veterinary College analysed data from over 9,000 dog owners, comparing the behaviour of crossbreeds like cockapoos, cavapoos, and labradoodles with purebred cocker spaniels, cavalier king charles spaniels, poodles, and labrador retrievers.
- Cockapoos showed more undesirable behaviours than both poodles and cocker spaniels across several scales, including owner-directed aggression, stranger-directed aggression, and separation-related problems.
- Cavapoos also displayed more problematic behaviours compared to their purebred parents, particularly when contrasted with cavalier king charles spaniels.
- The researchers advise potential dog owners to thoroughly research breed and crossbreed characteristics to make informed decisions and avoid misinformed selections.
