Student ordered to stay 500m away from King Charles and not carry eggs in public after egging arrest

The 23-year-old man suspected of throwing eggs at King Charles as he made a royal visit to York this week has now been banned from carrying eggs in public and must stay 500m away from the monarch. Patrick Thelwell was arrested after eggs were thrown at His Majesty and Queen Consort on Wednesday (Nov 9).

Neither of the royals were hit with footage of the moment capturing the sound of eggs cracking as they hit the ground. The King and his wife were ushered away quickly after.

In a tweet posted this morning, North Yorkshire Police said: "Here is an update following an arrest during yesterday’s Royal Visit Yesterday, we arrested a 23-year-old man on suspicion of a public order offence during the Royal visit.

"The man has been interviewed and released on police bail. He was detained following an incident which occurred as King Charles III and the Queen Consort arrived at Micklegate Bar in York yesterday.

Speaking to the Mirror after being released from custody, Patrick said he has since received death threats. The University of York student said he was also attacked by the crowd at the time.

He said: " was let out at 10pm so it wasn’t that bad really. My friends were waiting for me. My solicitor was very good. After I was arrested the experience of that crowd, literally screaming and wailing with pure rage. Saying that my head should be on a spike, that I should be murdered on the spot.

"It doesn't phase me because I understand what fascism is, what it looks like. People were ripping chunks of my hair out, they were spitting at me. People lost their minds. It's just so revealing to see when you challenge someone’s beliefs in that way, the belief of the superiority of this man’s blood.”

Upon being asked why eggs were throws towards the King, who has been active in raising awareness of climate change, Patrick replied: “If that is what we take as someone who has done the most for climate change it shows you how low the bar is! This is a man who dresses in stolen jewels from India and Africa and every other colony.”

After his arrest and release from custody, the student has been ordered bail conditions he must follow, which he describes as "amusing". He said the conditions include not being allowed to be 500 metres within the King and not being allowed to possess any eggs in a public place. However, he claims they had to be altered so he could go food shopping.

Patrick added he has been charged with Section 4 public order offence. He is also scheduled to appear in court on December 1.

He went on to tell the Mirror that he has changed his passwords after receiving sinister messages, including death threats. He revealed: "I've had death threats, people on DM, Instagram, saying: “If I’m not careful I'm going to get my head cut off’," he said.

“People (the public) were kicking me. Of course they were. I challenged the very core of their identity. The police tried to stop me saying what I was saying. They held my mouth shut, they had their thumbs in my eyes. All of which would make some readers say good.

“They kneed me repeatedly in the side. But once I got to the station they gave me Pot Noodles.”

Asked why he tried to pelt the King with eggs, he said: "I did what I did because I don't believe in kings. I believe in the equality of all people: “It's a protest against the state of this country and the descent into fascism. We have a Government that are enacting fascist policies particularly by their treatment of refugees. The media is whipping up hatred. Not the Mirror.

"Look at the rhetoric just days after a far-right extremist firebombed a refugee centre. Then you have the Government talking about an invasion. I don't believe in borders. I don't believe in nation states. I believe in people.

"I believe in democracy and solidarity with all the world's people who are suffering right now in large part because of conditions created by the British state. The United Kingdom as a whole, needs to be abolished, dissolved and its assets given as reparations to help the world and build resilience to the climate breakout that we have caused. It's time for the people of the world to unite and have the revolution that we desperately need to survive.”

Patrick said he has spoken to his mum, a teacher, since his release and he said she was "concerned" about him but okay with him. He said: "It's not our first rodeo".

Mirror.co.uk has approached North Yorkshire Police for a response.
