Strictly's Shirley Ballas 'sad' as she issues update about famous son

Shirley Ballas told fans she is "sad" as she issued an update on her famous son.

The 62-year-old, who hails from Wallasey, is best known as head judge on Strictly Come Dancing. Prior to this, Shirley rose to fame as an incredibly talented dancer, having won several championship titles which earned her the nickname The Queen of Latin

And it seems like the talent runs in the family, as her son, Mark Ballas, is also a professional dancer.

Mark has spent the last 16 years competing on Dancing With the Stars, which is the USA's answer to Strictly. Mark was partnered with TikTok star, Charli D'Amelio, and the two's scintillating performances were recognised when they were crowned season 31 winners.

But this week he confirmed he is retiring from the show. Reacting to the news on Instagram, Shirley said she was "sad but excited".

She said: "Although I'm sad to see my son retire from @dancingwiththestars I'm excited to see the next chapter of his life. Hang on to your hat and buckle up as it will be quite the ride.

"I'm proud of you Mark. A lifetime of memories. Congratulations on all your achievements. Three times mirror ball winner and 11 time finalist. Looking forward to the next chapter.

"I'm happy I was there in Vegas to see the last dance with @charlidamelio. What a team. Love you Mark. Your heart shines so very brightly. Xxx @markballas".

Fans were quick to comment on Shirley's post. Sharon said: "He, along with Derek, are by far the best choreographers that have come out of DWTS. His season with Charlie was the best!!! X", while Cath said: "Super talented family, and you seem like the loveliest people x".

Heather said: "He looks lovely", while Lee said: "He went out a winner".
