Strictly Come Dancing star Nicola Adams and her partner Ella Baig have opened up about their difficult IVF journey before they welcomed their beautiful baby boy, Taylor.
Lovebirds Nicola and Ella welcomed their healthy baby boy one month earlier than expected back in July, but before their baby boy with Taylor, the pair struggled through a long journey with IVF and dealt with a heartbreaking miscarriage before their happiness came.
Appearing on This Morning on Thursday alongside hosts Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary, new mums Nicola and Ella shed light on the obstacles that come with going through an IVF journey, including the lack of diversity in donors, and unequal rights for same sex partners who are hoping to welcome a baby.
The couple revealed that they are hoping to eventually have four children if they can.
Olympic champion Nicola said: “It was an amazing moment finding out that Ella was pregnant. I was over the moon and buzzing - we did two pregnancy tests to make sure!”
However, Ella admitted how the journey to having Taylor wasn’t plain sailing amid several obstacles.
“The first [IVF] attempt didn’t take, and the second time we miscarried, and then the third time we got him, after the second time when I wanted to try again, I said if it doesn’t work this time ‘I need a break’ because it’s really emotionally challenging and can be really really hard."
Nicola went on to explain another reason for doing the documentary was to highlight the lack of diverse sperm donors.
She explained: “There’s barely any black donors when you look on the websites, there’s maybe two or three, maximum.
To which Ella added: “You’ll go on a site with thousands of donors and you’ll narrow down your search to Caribbean or African and they’ll be no Carribean and maybe three Africans and that’s it and for people that are going through IVF who looks like them and is the same race as them, there are no donors.”
Nicola and Ella welcomed their baby son with IVF using Nicola’s egg fertilised via a sperm donor who resembled Ella.
Back in 2020, Ella and Nicola, started IVF using Nicola’s egg fertilised via a sperm donor who resembled Ella.
And in July, the pair welcomed their baby boy, Taylor Nate.
Opening up about why they had decided upon Taylor's name, Nicola explained: "We had a few names in mind because we wanted to see what he looked like first to see if the name suited him.
"We didn’t want to get stuck on one name and have to think of a new one if it didn’t work."
