Strictly star John Whaite has issued a health update, telling fans he wished he known about his diagnosis sooner.
The Great British Bake Off winner, 34, has been honest about his health, previously sharing his battle with depression and bulimia and choosing to go sober after a difficult relationship with alcohol.
John has now revealed he has ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) in a candid post on social media. Sharing a photo of himself, the baker wrote on Instagram: "Am I posting this for a dopamine rush, or to inform? Well, it turns out, a little bit of both. Because I have ADHD, which explains a lot."
The condition, as stated by the NHS, is one which affects people's behaviour. People with ADHD can seem restless, may have trouble concentrating and may act on impulse and those with it may also have additional problems, such as sleep and anxiety disorders.
Opening up about his experience with ADHD, John continued: "I’ve known my behaviour over the past decade (and my thinking for the past 30-odd years) has not been ‘normal’.
"I’ve often questioned whether I have some personality disorder, deep-rooted psychological trauma, or just a brain that isn’t quite wired up right. I’ve been impulsive and borderline addicted (to sex, porn, shopping, food, drink, drugs), and have made some very questionable decisions."
Despite not knowing about his condition previously, John concluded he was "grateful" for the diagnosis, adding "the shame and guilt can be replaced with conversation."
The reality star's post was warmly received by his followers, with many telling John they too had ADHD.
One said: "Hiiii welcome to team spicy brain late diagnosis club! I got diagnosed at 29 and it was life changing and truly such a huge relief to know there’s a reason my brain does what it does xx".
While another added: "Welcome to the club. Am glad your diagnosis has given you more understanding. But more made up that you’ve spoke about this publicly, because late diagnosis effects so many people."
John amassed thousand of fans when he and Johannes became the first male same sex couple to take part in Strictly.
As they took to the dance floor in the final of the show in 2021, they received a rapturous applause with a Couple’s Choice dance to Adele’s Hometown Glory, which they dedicated to the LGBT+ community.
After the dance, John said: "To the people who perhaps feel a bit afraid in life, I want those people to know that it gets better."
Strictly fans loved the Bake Off star's journey with Johannes with one saying they could "die happy now".
