Strictly Come Dancing's Amy Dowden updates fans following cancer surgery

Strictly Come Dancing professional Amy Dowden has issued an update following surgery for cancer.

The 32-year-old Welsh ballroom and Latin American dancer announced in May that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Amy said in an Instagram story on Thursday, June 8 that her surgery “went well” and gave a “big thank you” to her surgeons and nurses who had been “utterly amazing”.

She added: “(I’m) very sore but focusing on the positives, they said the surgery went well! Thanks for all the support and messages.”

Ahead of starting treatment yesterday (June 7), the TV star took to Instagram to share a photo of herself from her hospital bed as she told her fans and friends that she is starting 'step one to beating cancer'.

Whilst she donned a hospital gown, the 32-year-old looked positive as she smiled for the camera and put two thumbs up. Amy then told her followers: "Step one to beating cancer! Rrrrrrready for this fight and more determined than ever to get back on the dance floor."

Her fellow Strictly professional dancers and former contestants soon flocked to the comments to send their love and support. Strictly pro Gorka Marquez commented "You got this," whilst Kevin Clifton added: "Love u sis."

Former It Takes Two host Zoe Ball commented: "Huge love and strength to you beautiful Amy." Another Strictly co-star, Karen Hauer, also added: "Love you. You've got this."

Last month the dancer shared her personal news in the hopes to raise awareness of the disease and help others going through their own diagnoses.

Amy, who has battled the chronic gut condition Crohn's Disease since she was a child, told Hello! magazine: "I've been through quite a lot in my life and this is another hurdle."

"You just don't ever think it's going to happen to you," she said. "I hadn't thought it was possible to get breast cancer at my age. My mum has had breast cancer, but she had it at a later age, in her 50s."

Amy went on to share: "This last year, obviously, I made a conscious effort to check my breasts. CoppaFeel! has now potentially saved my life, because I don't know how long this lump could have been there before I would have noticed and done something about it. So me speaking out might end up saving some other people's lives because they start checking their breasts."
