Strict measures are being considered to close down a number of Ashfield alleyways and stop crime. If the public back the new plans, eight locations in Hucknall, Kirkby-in-Ashfield and Sutton-in-Ashfield will see alleyways either closed or their access restricted.
The closures will happen under Public Space Protection Order powers (PSPOs), which are intended to deal with a particular nuisance or problem detrimental to the local community’s quality of life. Ashfield District Council councillors say the measures will ensure the law-abiding majority can use and enjoy public spaces without experiencing antisocial behaviour.
The council are planning to close the service road off Outram Street, Sutton-in-Ashfield, at one side and install CCTV on the other, with full closures proposed elsewhere. The Public Spaces Protection Order being proposed is intended to restrict public access in the below locations:

Councillor David Hennigan, who represents Sutton Central and New Cross on Ashfield District Council, said: "These closures will positively improve the quality of lives for hundreds of residents. We are asking residents to have their say. Please don’t leave it to others.
"In my view, these closures are vital as they are well known for attracting anti-social behaviour and attracting criminals. We have worked with the Council’s Community Protection team, the police and residents to provide the evidential base to justify these proposed changes.
"We don’t want to be a council who restricts access to anyone but these alleyways need shutting to protect residents. The consultation takes two minutes to complete but your help will help others living in unacceptable conditions."
Ashfield District Council councillors are encouraging as many people to have their say over the proposed closure and the access restriction of a number of ‘dodgy alleyways’ in Ashfield. Residents have until January 5 to say whether they support the move.
