One man who has lived in the area all his life said: "It's absolutely awful what has happened. I just got out of the shower and she [my mum] said look there's a helicopter over there and the police cordoned it all off and were here until about 11.30pm.
"My dad was a fire officer for 30 years and when he was doing jobs at night neighbours used to ask him if he wanted a cup of tea. So I saw this officer walking past and asked him, and said it was cold and they had a long night.
"I went over there [the floral shrine] to leave some flowers. It's so sad. My mum, who is in her 80s, is still crying. You see it like this happen on the telly but you don't expect it literally on your doorstep."
Another man spoke of how he heard an "almighty thump" followed by a scream when the tragedy occurred.
He told The ECHO: "I can't get that [noise] out of my head, it's just awful. I think the worst thing was when I looked out the younger child, his younger brother, he was sat down on the grass and he was screaming, crying his eyes out.
"There was a lady who was holding him, but he's going to be stuck with it for the rest of his life. How is he going to get over that?
"I'm very shaken and sad, somebody's life is just gone."
A woman living on the road said she is nervous about letting her grandchildren play out in the street.
She said: "It's absolutely awful. I've got seven grandchildren and I'm feeling for them all.
"My grandkids play on them hills, so I have to be out here watching them. I tell them "don't go out that gate".
Floral tributes have started to build at the scene, with dozens of bouquets, and a Liverpool FC scarf, attached to at tree.
