Street 'full of pensioners' rocked as crossbow 'fired from window'

An arrow was spotted in the middle of a road in Kirkdale after a crossbow was "fired from a window".

The weapon was slung from a block of flats on Celia Road and landed on neighbouring street Miranda Road. Officers detained a 54-year-old man before they cordoned off the area.

Homeowners and neighbours on Marsh Street, which is adjoined to Celia Road, told the ECHO they were shocked to hear the news.

A pensioner on Miranda Place said: “It’s so quiet around here, everyone on this street are pensioners, you wouldn’t expect an incident like this.”

Others were less surprised, as one mum said: “You hear that many of them [police] around here you tend to switch off.” Another onlooker said: “There’s never a dull moment in Liverpool”.

Many people on Marsh Street were aware a crossbow had been fired but their knowledge was limited beyond that. One man told the ECHO: "They’re [the police] not telling us anything.”

Officers were alerted of the incident at 12.45pm. Miranda News, which backs onto Celia Street, was forced to close temporarily.

An emergency response unit was at the scene but it left before 2.30pm, according to reports. Once the police removed the tape from Celia Street they sealed the front entrance of 33 Celia Street, a group of flats.

Two forensic officers arrived shortly after 3.00pm and inspected the apartments and outside area. After the police were contacted a tradesman was called to repair smashed windows in the conservatory.

On the incident on Celia Street Inspector Martin Mannion said: “Thanks to the quick actions of our officers, the man was detained and his weapon recovered before any harm was caused to members of the public.

“Nonetheless, this would have been an extremely shocking incident for anyone to witness and our officers are currently carrying out extensive enquiries to establish the full circumstances.

“If you were in the area at the time of the incident and saw anything then please let us know – all information you hold could be vital to our investigation.

“We will not tolerate those who use dangerous weapons to cause fear and harm in our communities, so please tell us what you know to keep our streets safer.”

The 54-year-old man was detained and arrested on suspicion of attempted Section 18 Wounding and Affray. He was taken into custody and will be questioned by the police.

Officers have seized the crossbow and it is being forensically examined.
