A German shepherd who was found roaming the streets last summer is patiently waiting for a new family in Manchester. Zeus arrived at Manchester Dogs’ Home in August 2021, and was ‘very scared’ when he was first rescued by the team.
Little is known about the five-year-old dog’s history, but staff at the centre have got to know the gorgeous pooch over the last 12 months.
The dogs’ name comes from Greek mythology, with Zeus being the sky and thunder God, who ruled as the king of gods of Mount Olympus.

Initially, the terrified dog displayed his fear by barking at volunteers. A spokesperson for the charity said: “Over time, once he realised he was safe, he grew confident around some of the staff members. In order to build up his trust, Zeus may need potential adopters to commit to several visits here at the home before the adoption can take place.”
After building up trust with staff, Zeus is now partial to a belly rub and enjoys playing football. The German shepherd certainly has a ‘softer, more playful side’, but just needs time to show it.
Manchester Dogs’ Home added: “Moving forward, although his behaviour with other dogs is improving, Zeus will require ongoing training and socialisation with other dogs as he does bark and lunge when he sees them.
“He will require an experienced owner with a pet free household and no children under the age of 16 years old.”
Zeus’ new family will need to be mindful of the fact that Zeus has been diagnosed with hip dysplasia, which will require ongoing medical treatment. The condition can, over time, cause arthritis and limited mobility.
Anyone interested in adopting five-year-old Zeus should contact the rescue centre directly.
