Stray Dog “Kali” in Odisha Dies While Saving 30+ Children from Snake Attack

The dog, locally known as “Kali,” lived around Dhirakula village and was largely an unnoticed stray. However, her final act of bravery has now made her a symbol of protection and loyalty for the entire community.

Snake spotted near school premises

According to local reports, the incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. when more than 30 kindergarten students of Sri Jagannath Sishu Vidya Mandir were sitting outside their school. A venomous snake suddenly slithered close to the area, posing an immediate threat to the children.

Before any adult could intervene, Kali sensed the danger and rushed toward the reptile.

A fierce fight to protect children

Witnesses said Kali positioned herself between the snake and the children, preventing it from getting any closer. She then engaged in a prolonged and aggressive fight with the reptile.

Despite being repeatedly struck by the snake, Kali did not retreat. She eventually managed to kill the snake, preventing any harm to the children present at the scene.

However, during the struggle, she was bitten on the mouth and exposed to the venom.

Sacrifice that saved lives

Although the children were safe, Kali’s injuries proved fatal. After the fight ended, she collapsed and died shortly afterward due to the venom.

Villagers later described that her actions likely saved the lives of more than 30 children who could have been directly at risk.

Emotional farewell by villagers

The news of Kali’s death deeply affected the local community. Residents of Dhirakula village came together to honor the stray dog in a manner usually reserved for humans.

According to local accounts, her body was covered with a white cloth, decorated with flowers, and taken through the village in a small procession before burial. The villagers performed last rites with full respect, acknowledging her courage and sacrifice.

From stray to guardian

What was once an unnamed stray dog has now become a remembered guardian of the village. For many residents, Kali is no longer just a street dog but a symbol of instinctive courage and protection.

Her story has left a lasting impact on the community, turning fear and indifference toward strays into reflection and gratitude.
