Strathfoyle Greenway project to "open before Christmas" following delays

The Strathfoyle Greenway project should be on target for an opening before Christmas, it has been confirmed.

Derry City and Strabane District Council (DCSDC) said that "unavoidable construction delays" stopped the project from opening on its originally targetted date of Summer 2022, but "it's hoped" that it would open to the public before the upcoming festive period.

Work on the project began in March with noticeable progress on-site emerging over the past few months.

The new space will run from the end of the Waterside Greenway at Foyle Bridge to Stradowen Drive in Strathfoyle, a distance of 2.7km.

The £2.64m greenway is being developed by Derry and Strabane Council in partnership with the Department of Communities, Department of Infrastructure, and Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs.

In a short statement to MyDerry, a spokesperson for DCSDC said: "Work continues to progress on the 2.7km Strathfoyle greenway project which will provide a vital sustainable travel link to the Strathfoyle area.

"Since the work commenced in March we have experienced some unavoidable construction delays which have impacted on the completion date.

"However, work is now progressing well and it's hoped that the project will be completed and open to the public before Christmas."
