Strathaven trots into Christmas as popular Reindeer Day returns to town

Strathaven is looking forward to celebrating one of the biggest events on its festive calendar when the annual Reindeer Day celebration comes to town.

Warmly welcomed back after a three year hiatus due to the COVID pandemic thousands of people are expected to line the streets to welcome Santa, pulled by his team of guest reindeer which are visiting from the Cairngorm Reindeer Company.

This year they will touch down at 11.30am on Sunday, December 11, with children invited to visit Santa’s Grotto in the Climate Action Strathaven premises on Green Street from 12.30pm to 2.30pm.

Festive revellers will have the opportunity to get up close to the reindeer in their pen on Allison Green.

Father Christmas will also travel through the streets of Strathaven with a wonderful reindeer parade round the Common Green from Allison Green at 3pm.

And there will be an array of market stalls selling Christmas treats as well as some fun rides for the kids.

The event – organised by the Strathaven Business Association with help from organisations around the town – will get underway at noon.

The event will be changed slightly this year, with a larger funfair in the Common Green and all market stalls and food trucks in Allison Green, along with the reindeer pen.

And folk can round off their Reindeer Day festivities by sitting back and enjoying some seasonal sounds courtesy of Avondale Radio.

Chair of Strathaven Business Association, Les Hoggan, said: "We're delighted Reindeer Day is back after three years, it will be great to welcome everyone to come and celebrate with Santa.

"We're grateful to the Strathaven Scouts, Strathaven Agricultural Show and Adams Community Trust for helping to organise the event."

Entry to Santa's Grotto cost £2 per child or £5 for a family pass which includes a Christmas present for each child.

The Common Green will be closed off to traffic from 7am till 5pm.
