Stranger Things Series 4, Part Two: When it is set and how you can watch it

Five weeks since the first seven episodes of the latest series were released, Stranger Things is back again to the delight of fans across the globe. The popular Netflix show is currently in its fourth season. Spoilers are ahead if you haven't seen episodes one to seven.

Season Four has seen its characters spread further apart than ever before. Many of the plotlines occur across many US states and even spreading into Russia. Believing Hopper (David Harbour) to be dead (he's not), Joyce (Winona Ryder) took Will (Noah Schnapp), Johnathan (Charlie Heaton) and Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) away from Hawkins to start afresh in California. Things took a dark turn, however, when Eleven met One (Jamie Campbell Bower), who turns out to be series villain - Vecna.

Vecna is a terrifying monster from the Upside Down, who has possessed several of Hawkins' kids and lured them to grisly deaths. His attentions then turned to Max, who rescued herself from his clutches by listening to Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill on repeat. Notably for attracting viewers at multiple intervals, some people have questioned the time period in which Stranger Things is set. Read on for the answer to that very question.

When is Stranger Things set?

Finn Wolfhard as Mike Wheeler, Caleb McLaughlin as Lucas Sinclair and Gaten Matarazzo as Dustin Henderson (PA)

Well, the answer is March 1986, eight months after events of the third season. With its pop culture references such as Kate Bush and The Beach Boys, you'd be mad not to notice that season four is set in the middle of the '80s. During the first season of Stranger Things, fans were introduced to 'The Party' in 1983. The first three seasons of Netflix's Stranger Things take place over almost exactly two years, going from 1983 to 1985. While the younger kids on the show start out in seventh grade, by the time season three ends they should be in high school.

So far, season four has seen a multitude of pop culture references. Viewers have been treated to the likes of Double VHS', surf-inspired brand Ocean Pacific and even 1986 film, Police Academy 3: Back in Training.
