Stranger Things fans advised not to get Eleven tattoo themselves

Some fans of the TV show Stranger Things have been following in Eleven's footsteps by getting a tattoo. However, the Daily Star reports, they have now been given a stark warning against rushing out to get the numerical design.

In the Duffer brothers' show, Eleven, who is played by Millie Bobby Brown, has a tattoo which reads 011 on her wrist. It was inked onto her by Dr Martin Brenner, played by Matthew Modine.

The doctor also gave matching tattoos to the other children he experimented on. Similar wrist tattoos have now been adopted by fans.

However, one Twitter user pointed out the tattoo's negative connotations, saying those given in Stranger Things are reminiscent of tattoos given to concentration camp prisoners during the Holocaust. They said: "In the holocaust, upon arriving at a concentration/death/work camp, you would get a tattoo like this.

"It was a process not only so that the Nazis could keep track and records of people, but also to dehumanise people. They no longer had a name because they weren't deemed significant enough to have one. They were instead referred to as a number only."

Kimberly Terasaki, writer at The Mary Sue website, elaborated on the warning in a recent article. She said that Eleven's tattoo is "meant to be directly linked to the dehumanisation experienced by Jewish people during the Holocaust".

By tattooing Eleven, Ms Terasaki said that Dr Brenner strips her of her freedom and the name her mother gave her. Some fans were thankful for the warning, with one person saying: "The message is very true."

Another wrote: "I'm just shocked that people don’t just see this kind of thing and immediately connect it to such a horrible moment in human history."

However, some fans weren't so sure the warning was necessary. One person said: "Let people do whatever they want with their bodies 'cause it’s none of your business."

Another wrote: "Who cares? No one was thinking about that until you brought it up. They got it because of the show."
