Stranger punches man in random Leeds attack and breaks his jaw

A man was left unconscious and with a broken jaw after an unprovoked attack in Leeds city centre.

Around 5.50pm on Friday, November 11, a 36-year-old man was walking to Leeds Railway Station before a stranger approached him near the entrance of Trinity shopping centre car park. Without warning, the man punched him in the face.

The victim was knocked into a barrier and to the ground where he was left unconscious before passers-by went to his aid. The suspect ran off towards the train station with a woman.

The victim had to undergo surgery for a broken jaw and have a metal plate fitted and is continuing to receive treatment. The attacker had also been seen assaulting another man in the same area moments before the attack, but this was not reported to police.

The man, who had a ticket to Bradford, was involved in an altercation with ticket staff at the barrier after the incident and was refused travel. The incident is being treated as grievous bodily harm with intent and is under investigation by Leeds District CID, a spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said.

The suspect was with a woman during and after the attack and police would like to speak to the pair (West Yorkshire Police)

The force are investigating the incident and want to trace the movement of the suspect and the woman he was with. CCTV images have now been released of a man police would like to speak to in connection with the incident.

Anyone who recognises him or who has any information that could assist the investigation is asked to contact DC 4455 Merritt at Leeds District CID via 101 quoting crime reference 13220624692 or online via the live chat facility. Information can be given anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
