Stormzy 'proud' of Marcus Rashford for standing ground on food campaign amid backlash

Stormzy has commended Marcus Rashford for staying committed to his food campaign - despite some backlash from the public.

The England international, 25, has pushed for low-income families to be given free school meals outside term time as well as the increase of the rate of Universal Credit.

Despite his best efforts, Marcus has been criticised by some, who believe the star should concentrate on playing football.

However, rapper Stormzy, 29, believes the Man Utd star should "stand his ground".

Speaking on BBC Breakfast this morning, he said: “He’s probably very confused (at the backlash)… and that’s happened to me a couple of times in my career, so I’m just proud of him. I (would just) encourage him to carry on.”

The star, who created the Stormzy Scholarship for Black UK Students at the University of Cambridge, which covers tuition costs, added: “I think, even for someone like Marcus, I’m sure he gets a lot of ‘Just shut up and kick your football’, and I’m proud of him for what he does – he stands his ground and does what he needs to do…"

Marcus was the star of the show as England beat Wales 3-0 last night in the World Cup.

The Mancunian scored two goals and was praised by Stormzy for his performance.

The award-winning rapper has just released his third studio album, This Is What I Mean.

Speaking about the recording process, the star said: “This time I’m like, I’m just really proud… So there’s no pressure in that.”

He added that the new album has so “much feeling, freedom and soul” that it will “touch people in the heart”.

Stormzy recently got tongues wagging after he was papped with ex Maya Jama.

The former couple split in 2019 after the rapper cheated on the Love Island host, admitting the misdemeanour was his 'biggest mistake'.

The exes sent fans into a frenzy when they both attended at the GQ Men of the Year 2022 awards in London earlier this month.

Sources at the glitzy event, which included guests John Boyega, Salma Hayek and Rochelle Humes, claimed they saw the couple chatting in a quiet corner before leaving moments apart.

But Maya's team confirmed exclusively to The Mirror the former couple are not romantically together.

The newly single presenter recently split from NBA player Ben Simmons, after the pair had a "difficult time" due to their long-distance relationship.

The couple split in July of this year after getting engaged in December while Maya was in the States.
