Storm Malik: What time Glasgow will be hit with severe weather as warning issued by Met Office

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind for much of the UK across the weekend.

In addition to the warning, they have also confirmed the event as Storm Malik - named by the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) - which is set to bring with it a low pressure system, high winds and wet weather on Saturday.

Originally a yellow weather warning for wind was issued for parts of Scotland on Thursday (January 27) evening however Glasgow was not part of the affected area.

Weather forecasters have said that the warning was put in place as "strong westerly winds" are expected to bring some disruption to those wanting to travel.

The warning is in place from as early as 4am tomorrow (January 29) until 3pm the same day when the weather should settle.

It is then expected to pick up again with a second warning in place from 6pm on Sunday (January 30) until 12pm the following day (January 31).

Here, they warn that "strong winds will likely cause some travel disruption and generate some large and dangerous waves around the coasts."

Discussing what's to come, the Met Office said: "An area of strong winds will cross Scotland, parts of Northern Ireland and some northern counties of England on Saturday morning before easing during the afternoon.

"Gusts of widely 50-60 mph are expected and there is a chance of a brief period of gusts in excess of 70 mph in places, particularly for parts of eastern Scotland later in the morning. On Sunday evening a spell of strong northwesterly winds is likely to develop across western Scotland, and then progress southeastwards eventually easing away from the North Sea coastlines during Monday morning.

"The strongest wind gusts will mostly occur around the coastlines and over the hills, with many of these exposed locations expected to see gusts reach 50-60 mph for a time. In addition, a small chance that a very limited part of the area could see a short period of more damaging gusts, that could reach 60-70mph inland, and 70-80mph around exposed coasts and hills."

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Paul Gundersen added: "For those in the north of the UK there will be high winds and rain on Saturday, with showers possibly turning wintry in the high ground in the north. The highest winds are expected in exposed coastal areas in the north and east of Scotland, but it will be a windy day for most.”

"Storm Malik starts what will be an unsettled weekend of weather for the UK, as another low pressure system moves across northern areas on Sunday. This will bring a further spell of very strong winds whilst, depending upon the track of the system, there could be some snow across parts of Scotland.

"A yellow warning has been issued, which is likely to be reviewed over the weekend as developments become more certain. Further south, the weekend weather will feature some blustery winds, with some small amounts of rain."
