Storm Henk: Where have flood warnings been issued in London?

Several London neighbourhoods are still under flood alerts and warnings, even though the intense rain and flooding from Thursday have subsided.

The floods caused the emergency closure of London Underground stations for safety on Thursday afternoon and led to the sinking of a party boat moored at Temple Pier on the Thames. After water levels between Dace Road and Wick Road in Hackney rose, 70 firefighters were sent to the site and 50 residents of Hackney Wick had to leave their houses due to flooded streets.

Following Storm Henk's disruption of most of England earlier this week, heavy rain has fallen on already wet ground causing floods.

The London Fire Brigade said it is trying to redirect the floodwaters and has set up a safety cordon.

Where are the flood warnings in London and what should you do in a flood? Here's what you need to know.

What to do in a flood?

When there is a flood warning, you must take action. According to the government's website, these are the things you must do:

  • When it's safe to do so, relocate cars to higher ground and take your family and pets to safety.
  • Move valuables and possessions upstairs or to a secure location on your property before moving furniture and other furnishings.
  • Shut off the water, gas and electricity sources when it is safe to do so and never turn on an electrical outlet when submerged in water.
  • Use property protection products you have, such as air brick covers or flood barriers, as soon as possible, and stay informed about the most recent state of the flood danger.

In the case of a severe flood warning, call 999 if you're in immediate danger.

Make sure you also prepare an emergency kit.

A torch, extra batteries, a mobile phone and charger, warm clothes, vital phone numbers (such as your house insurance), water, food, a first aid kit and any medications or infant care supplies you might require should all be included in an emergency pack.

If you have come into contact with floodwater that may contain hazardous materials, wash your hands.
