Storm Gladys: Met Office forecast as wintry showers and wind hits UK

Nottinghamshire should avoid most of the UK's worst weather on Thursday but should still expect strong winds.

And the Met Office says the East Midlands will be hit with early rain, sleet and snow which will then turn to blustery wintry showers.

A weather warning is in place in northern Scotland for snow and lightning as a potential Storm Gladys threatens to cause disruption.

In Nottingham, wind gusts will reach up to 36mph later on Thursday, February 24, but there are no warnings in place as of 8.30am

There is a 60 percent chance of rain through the day in the city and temperatures will reach highs of 5C but feeling like -2C at times due to the wind chill.

Here's the outlook for the East Midlands from the Met Office:

Thursday:

Early rain, sleet and snow, heavy at times, clearing during the morning. Then noticeably colder with sunny spells and blustery wintry showers. The showers becoming more isolated later, but lingering over the Peak District. Becoming windy. Maximum temperature 6 °C.

Thursday night:

A band of squally winds and wintry showers will arrive later in the evening. Wintry showers becoming more isolated during the night, with winds easing slightly. Some clear spells developing. Minimum temperature 1 °C.

Friday:

Chilly start Friday, with showers continuing at first, wintry over the Peak District. Becoming dry with long sunny spells. Breezy to start, but winds soon becoming light. Maximum temperature 9 °C.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday:

Frosty start Saturday, then dry with sunny spells. Turning windy. Windy to start Sunday perhaps with some light rain, this clearing with winds easing. Further wind and rain Monday.
