Storm Franklin flooding deluges village as road closed and major housing site left underwater

Heavy downpours have left a trail of carnage on a Trafford village's roads while the site of a major housing development has been submerged.

Flixton Road, in Carrington, is currently closed due to flooding from the River Mersey.

It comes as Storm Franklin has battered Greater Manchester over the past couple of days, with areas hit by flooding and strong winds.

Thousands of homes and 350,000 sq m of employment land are due to be built as part of the entire New Carrington scheme, which also covers parts of Partington and Sale.

Flixton Road was closed off to traffic in both directions this afternoon (February 21), with the closure causing disruption to bus services.

In a post on Twitter, a spokesperson for One Trafford Partnership said: "We've closed Flixton Road due to flooding from the River Mersey.

"Teams are checking levels constantly and we will reopen the road when it’s safe to do so.

"Please do not [ignore] the traffic management in place, as the water is often deeper than it might appear."

A Stagecoach Greater Manchester spokesperson wrote on Twitter: "Due to Flixton Road being flooded, we are terminating our 255 services at Irlam Road/Flixton Road junction until further notice.

"We are sorry for the inconvenience that this may cause you."

An amber flood alert is currently in place for the Middle River Mersey catchment, which includes areas near Bramhall, Stockport, Sale, Altrincham and Urmston.

In an update issued this morning, the Environment Agency said: "River levels remain high on the River Mersey due to heavy rainfall over the weekend.

"Flooding remains possible for properties around East Didsbury, West Didsbury and Northenden.

"Please do not attempt to drive through flood water, avoid low lying land and roads and be aware of your surroundings."

A red flood warning also remains in place for River Bollin and Agden Brook at Little Bollington, just over the border from Trafford in Cheshire.
