Storm Franklin batters coastal route as Ayrshire rail line shut down

Trains on a South Ayrshire rail line have been called off due to extreme wind.

ScotRail say they have axed services between Ayr and Stranraer until at least 5pm today.

Network Rail were forced to shut down the line due to strong winds.

A tweet from Network Rail on Sunday evening said: “The line between Stranraer and Ayr will be shut for most of tomorrow due to extreme wind.”

It comes as Storm Franklin continues to batter the region with a Yellow still in place until 1pm this afternoon.

Advice from the Met Office reads: "Winds are likely to strengthen across England and Wales on Sunday, as an increasingly squally band of rain moves southeast wards.

"Gusts of 55-60 mph are expected widely around south and west facing coasts, but possibly also briefly inland. There is a chance that a few exposed places could see gusts near 70 mph."

Passengers have been advised their rail tickets can be used on Stagecoach bus services between Ayr and Maybole, Ayr and Girvan and Ayr and Stranraer.

ScotRail confirmed tickets can also be used on the X77 between Ayr and Glasgow, via Prestwick and Kilmarnock.

Services to Glasgow from Ayr are still running, with the Stranraer to Ayr service starting from Ayr.
