Storm Eunice: Popular Bristol attractions announce closure amid red weather warning

Some of Bristol's most popular visitor attractions have have said they will close temporarily as the region prepares for severe weather conditions.

The Met Office has issued a red weather warning for extremely strong winds between 7am and midday on Friday, February 18 and the Environment Agency has issued a flood warning for Severn Beach, as well as flood alerts for Porlock Weir, along the Severn between Avonmouth and Sharpness and along the Avon into Bristol.

Due to the potential for disruption, The Avon and Somerset Local Resilience Forum has declared Storm Eunice a major incident. Significant disruption and dangerous conditions are expected along the length of the west coast of Somerset, through the Bristol Channel and Severn Estuary into Gloucestershire, with members of the public urged to avoid travelling on Friday morning amid wind speeds of up to 90mph.

As Bristol prepares to batten down the hatches, a number of the city's top tourist attractions are shutting up shop until the worst of the storm has passed. One popular venue to announce a temporary closure is Bristol Museum & Art Gallery on Queens Road, which has urged people to "stay safe".

In a tweet, the venue said: "The museum will be closed tomorrow (Friday, February 18) due to Storm Eunice and the red weather warning in place in the Bristol area. We will be contacting all ticket holders. Please stay safe and avoid travelling. The museum will be open as normal from Saturday."

Another museum, Aerospace in Filton, has also informed its would-be visitors that it will be closed tomorrow due to the adverse weather conditions. On Twitter it said: "Due to tomorrow’s red weather warning, Aerospace Bristol will be closed on Friday, February 18.

"Thank you for your understanding and we look forward to reopening on Saturday and welcoming many of you over next week’s school holiday."

Elsewhere, We The Curious in Millennium Square said on Twitter: "Due to the adverse weather conditions forecast for tomorrow, we’ve decided to close our venue as a precautionary measure - the safety of our staff and visitors is paramount."

And there's also a chance that the most iconic sight in the city - the Clifton Suspension Bridge - could also shut for the day. The visitor centre will definitely close, said a spokesperson, and a decision will be made on the bridge itself.

The spokesperson told Bristol Live: "We are closing the Visitor Centre for the whole day for the safety of our team and visitors, and are monitoring wind speeds on the bridge. Depending on wind speed and direction, we may be closing the bridge to traffic and pedestrians at short notice.

"We’ll be updating on the situation on our Facebook and Twitter channels."

M Shed has also confirmed closure, tweeting: "M Shed will be closed tomorrow (Friday 18 February) due to Storm Eunice and the red weather warning in place in the Bristol area. We will be contacting all ticket holders. Please stay safe and avoid travelling. The museum will be open as normal from Saturday."

All Bristol libraries and park cafes will also be closed, and schools have also been advised to shut.
