Storm Eunice: Met Office issues amber warning across all of Wales with 100mph winds forecast

The Met Office has issued an amber warning for the whole of Wales with parts set to be hit by 100mph winds as the country braces for Storm Eunice.

The forecasting service upgraded the warning on Wednesday as it tracks the storm that is developing the Atlantic and is due to hit on Friday. The warning is in place from 3am until 9pm on Friday, February 18.

It comes as Wales is already being hit by Storm Dudley with a large part of the country covered by a separate yellow wind warning. You can follow live updates here.

In the latest amber warning, forecasters said: "Extremely strong winds may develop over southwest England early on Friday, before spreading north and east during the day.

"Whilst there is still some uncertainty in the track of Eunice, there is an increasing likelihood of widespread inland wind gusts of 60-70 mph and up to 80 mph in a few places.

"Around coasts of west Wales and southwest England, gusts of 90 or possibly even 100 mph are possible. Winds are expected to ease across western areas through the afternoon, and eastern areas during the evening."

Wales weather forecaster Derek Brockway says: "Significant disruption is likely with damaging gusts of wind."

He had warned on Tuesday that the storm was likely to get upgraded.

Motorists have been urged to drive carefully, while electricity supply firms have issued warnings following the widespread outages in northern England and Scotland which followed storms earlier this year.

Western Power Distribution operations director Graham Halladay says: “We know that storm conditions can be a worrying time for our customers, so we have put a range of measures in place to ensure we’re ready for any impact on the electricity network.

“Preparations will be in place so that, whatever the weather, we can work to restore power supplies quickly and safely for you if they are disrupted.”
